Job – Energy and Transport Modeler/Researcher at IIASA, Austria

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) near Vienna in Austria, is looking to recruit a motivated and talented researcher in the area of transportation modeling to join the Energy Program (ENE).

Main Job Duties:
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team analyzing issues around energy and transport sector transitions in the context of climate change and broader sustainable development challenges. Their research will focus on modeling the implications of energy use with emphasis on the transport sector and they will work with and further develop the open source MESSAGEix model and its extensions. The purpose of the research is to inform international policy efforts, such as those related to the Paris Agreement or the Sustainable Development Goals, and assess synergies and trade-offs between them. The successful applicant is expected, among other things, to contribute to ongoing projects at IIASA, such as CD-LINKS or the Low Energy Demand (LED) study.
The position holder must be prepared to process and manage large datasets, including technology and consumer preference data, become proficient in using and developing a complex integrated assessment model, and apply the tool to respond to different research questions. In addition, the incumbent must be prepared to develop new modeling approaches and think critically and independently about her/his research as well as take over responsibility for leading projects.

Our Requirements:
Candidates should have a PhD (or equivalent) in economics, engineering or science (e.g., mathematics, physics) and at least five years of experience in integrated assessment modeling. To complement existing expertise in the ENE program, good knowledge of and hands-on experience with detailed transport sector modeling, ideally taking into account consumer heterogeneity, would be an important asset. The expectation is that the successful candidate will contribute to ongoing and future projects that analyze energy and transport sector transitions and their implication for broader sustainable development issues.
Experience with GAMS for quantitative modeling and programming skills in R and/or Python are highly desirable, as the ENE program is developing its modeling tools using these programming languages (cf. MESSAGEix documentation). In addition, specific domain knowledge on the transport sector and skills relevant for modeling consumer decisions in the transport sector (e.g., discrete choice modeling) is highly welcome.
IIASA offers an interdisciplinary workplace, with strong ties to a world-wide network of research institutions engaged in environmental and energy research and, in particular, on the analysis of climate change. The selected candidate will interact with leading researchers of different nationalities and is expected to conduct independent research as well as to contribute to tasks in larger collaborative research activities. In addition, the contribution to developing proposals for new research projects is expected.
